The Coffee

An empty coffee cup.

I've really wanted to write more this week, and today in particular, but I was really struggling to find something to actually write about. Bored, and with no idea what to do, I was sitting on my desk with this same page open, and then I got a bit of a silly idea: What if I just recorded a video in an interesting way? I wanted to make myself a coffee, and so I decided to record that.

I made the whole video in exactly an hour. I recorded the first shot at 17:44, the last shot at 18:05, and I finished editing the video at 18:44. I filmed for about 21 minutes, and edited for 39. I also took some additional time to upload the video and make the thumbnail, of course.

I could say that the style of the video itself was inspired by that of Edgar Wright — my favourite film director ever — and I will, but I will also be the first to admit that this is much sloppier, but that was kind of on purpose. I also wanna mention this bit from a Friday Nights episode by LoadingReadyRun, which I am pretty sure is also inspired by Edgar Wright.

What fully pushed me to make this was definitely this video by Ludalx, the main message of which (that I took at least) was to just make stuff. On the topic of the sloppiness I mentioned a few sentences ago, I wanted to just make something and not futz around with the details too much. I definitely could've done some shots differently and paid more attention to the continuity, but in the end I just wanted to see what I could do right there without messing around too much, and I created something I am very proud of. With the exception of some minor audio overlap when I press the button, and the whip pan at the end (and I guess the final second in the "credits"), the only editing I did for the video was just jumpcuts, so it was quite simple to do, but I still stitched together 22 shots in a snappy way, and I've really missed editing slightly more complex videos like this one.

I am super happy with how this turned out, and it serves as a good reminder for me that although I am focusing a lot on writing right now, there's plenty of other creative things I can do if I set my mind to them!

The writing page for this post.

By the way, yes. By the time I was able to drink it the coffee was quite cold.
