A Geometrical Decade
Today is July 13, 2026, which means that it's been exactly 10 years since I first bought the full version of Geometry Dash! It's a bit weird to write about this, as I've played it for more than half of my life. It's been around my life for more than it hasn't, so it doesn't actually feel that surprising, but still notable enough to write and retrospect a bit about!
This has been one of my creative outputs for a decade now! The main reason I got the full version instead of just sticking with Meltdown was that it featured the level editor, which I messed around in as soon as I got the game. I vividly remember building and uploading my first ever level the very same week I got it.
It's also been a source of challenges for me, probably some of the hardest things I'll do in any video game ever were here. In fact, a few days ago I beat what's probably my hardest level ever, and probably the hardest level I'll ever beat, the original version of Cataclysm! I beat it a few days ago, but I am sharing it publicly now in celebration of this milestone for me!
I also had a very tragic buggy fail at 91%, which I did upload on my second channel.
Anyways, there isn't a lot more I can really say, so I guess for a story I might as well leave here the full details of how I got into GD, as I find them a bit silly!
At the very end of 2015, and throughout all of 2016, Carykh had an ongoing YouTube competition called Ten Words of Wisdom. I've talked about the show before, I won't go into any real details here, but I do have to bring up that in episodes 14A and 14B (both parts) he used songs by the artist WaterFlame, specifically Chaotic and — more importantly — Hexagon Force. I discovered WaterFlame by these, and I loved both of these tracks, along with a few others I found myself.
A few weeks ahead I was at a summer camp and saw someone playing Geometry Dash on their phone at the end of the day, and so I downloaded Meltdown on my iPad when I got home, which was my true first experience with the game. After playing it I did like it, but I didn't think much of it, until one of the many channels I was subscribed to uploaded a video of them beating the official level, Hexagon Force. It was a relatively small video by a relatively small channel (at the time), but it showed me that the songs I liked were in this game, so after that I really really wanted to get the full version, which my mom bought me a few days later! And the rest is history.
I am very glad I've kept playing this game for so long. I am really proud of a lot of the things I've made and done in it, and although I'm not active in the community anymore (probably for good reason), I still love the game itself to bits, and I hope to stick with it for much more!
