Remembering Dashy Square

The Steam banner for Dashy Square

In the long long ago there was this game called Geometry Dash. I played it, and I still do sometimes!

It is one of the games I have played the most in my life, definitely the game I have played the most in my Steam library by a, frankly, uncomfortable margin. I started playing it in July 2016, but around that same time there was another game inspired by it called Dashy Square.

Dashy Square was developed by KasSanity, and was kind of similar to Geometry Dash but in the same way GD was originally inspired by The Impossible Game. It took some parts of it but mixed it up with new additions and a completely different art style!

I first got the game near the end of September 2016, about three months after I first got into Geometry Dash, and I've always really enjoyed it!

When I started playing, the full version hadn't released yet, and I did not have a Steam account, so I just played the Lite version on my iPad. It contained the first 16 levels and a very good amount of the customizables and other stuff. I wasn't that good at the game but I absolutely adored its song choices for its levels!

Around half a year later on March 2017, the full version dropped and I bought it! The main feature that excited me was the level builder! I even made an account and everything, though I never even got close to finishing a level. That, along with all other features including four more additional levels, two of which being the hardest of them all, made me super excited!

I played this game a ton. Once again I wasn't super good at it, but I really enjoyed the levels and especially the songs chosen for them, and the way that the music synchronized with the levels always scratched my brain very nicely.

The game featured very simple graphics but a lot of camera movements and effects, which could definitely be disorienting for some, however I found that the simple visuals evened it out since everything was defined very clearly. I could definitely understand why some could dislike it though.

A screenshot from the thirteenth level, Pursuit. It used the song by BoomKitty.

Although I had a Steam account by this point, I only bought the game on November 2018 on the platform, being only the fourth game I ever purchased there (behind Geometry Dash, Undertale, and The Impossible Game, what a list, huh?). I played it there for a few hours, but then I just kinda stopped and didn't look back.

Just a few weeks ago, while scrolling through my phone's offloaded apps, I noticed that it's still been there all this time, and of course the Steam version is still up! So I have been playing it again a little bit!

In retrospect the game still holds up a fair amount! Though it's definitely a lot less harder to me now, I don't know why exactly, just me getting better at with the camera weirdness, or just games in general I guess. Sadly the servers of the game are off and so I cannot access my old account at all or play any custom levels, but the editor itself still works.

I've played so much of it in fact I managed to beat Momentum! The twentieth and hardest level of the entire game! And although it took a lot of attempts (especially when trying to get the secret demon key) I eventually achieved it!

(I recorded it, but the quality is kinda bad and I forgot to disable my cursor… whoops… bad recording lol)

And that's that! I just felt like writing about this, partially because of this big achievement I accomplished, but also because I just wanna talk about this game again that I just feel like way too many people have forgotten about.
