The History of my Geometry Dash Icon Sets

Some icons from Geometry Dash icon sets I've used.

When I started playing Geometry Dash on July 2016 I wasn't very good at the game, which makes sense, I feel like most of us weren't. It took me over a month to make any real progress, but when I got more serious about the game I got two unlockable things that I loved and immediately started using: A dark green secondary colour for subscribing to RobTop's YouTube channel, and an icon for completing the level xStep in practice mode.

When I saw these I got curious about what other icons the game had for all the other gamemodes, and from there I made a plan for my first ever icon kit. I matched the dark green with a lighter green for the primary colour, and I chose icons which looked cool but were also feasible to unlock for me.

I did have two different cubes in mind. Aside from the xStep icon there's also an alien-looking one for beating Base After Base which fit well with the rocket ship, and I switched between the two of them often. Also after 2.1 came out I added the 300 user coin spider and the spiral death effect from the Secret Shop to the set!

This is the icon set that I started with, and even if it could've been better, I've always really loved it as it was undoubtedly me.

The next icon set I came up with is one I made during 2.1, and it took inspiration from many different places. Firstly, as soon as the trailer for GD World dropped I really liked the white and cyan colour combination the icons in the shop used, and there was a specific swirly icon in the Secret Shop that I really liked, so I wanted to use it! This also applies to the spider I used.

As for the other icons, the 60 demons ship might have been taken from this video by Polygon Donut, and the 2,500 star wave and 700 user coin robot were probably taken from a different YouTuber. The 900 user coin ball and 1,000 user coin UFO were definitely my own idea, as they both look very similar to each other and fit the colours well.

Almost all of these icons were quite challenging for me to get, even the double-lined trail, so it actually took me years to unlock the entire set, but it really made me work towards something big and it felt super rewarding to finally get everything!

Now, around the time I first thought about that previous icon set, a YouTuber I really liked called Norcda Childa uploaded a video on tips of how to improve level transitions. It was a very good video, but I was immediately attracted to the icon set he was using at the time, which was much different than his usual one.

And so I proceeded to shamelessly steal it. I copied the icon set exactly, trail and death effect included, and I really liked it! It has pretty much been in my rotation in some way until 2023 or so, and I sometimes return to it just for fun.

All of the icons from this set are from 2.1 too, including the trail this time. The cube, trail, and death effect are from the shops; the ship and UFO are unlocked with diamonds; the ball, robot, and spider are unlocked by shards; and the wave was unlocked by one of the new vaults (for the time).

This is definitely the icon set I have used for the most time.

Next up is an icon set that I made when 2.11 came out, which added the community shop. Every single icon here is one from that shop, and I went for medium blue as the primary colour, and kept the cyan of the futuristic icon set for a similar feel.

I actually remember being very indecisive when it came to some of these specific icons, as I had multiple different cubes, ships, balls, and spiders that I liked for this set. Below the first image is an alternate version featuring my other choices.

And lastly, I want to share my current icon set. Its colours and main icon are directly taken from GD Colon's video where he analyses the game's main levels, and this cube is used during the Geometrical Dominator section. I did want to change up the other icons from the video, though, but I did want to keep a general theme of using relatively early ones, so nothing from 2.11 or after (and usually much earlier).

I am currently using the 5 map packs ship, 40 demons ball, 20,000 jumps UFO, 4,000 stars wave, 10,000 stars robot, and 65 lava shards spider. I have changed some of these sometimes, but this is my current set.

I also used a dark teal colour and a default jade green, which are the colours I've used the most recently for my general identity, as you might be able to tell.

I created this icon kit a few months before 2.2 dropped, and after it did I changed the glow to be white, and have used the dodecahedron swing from the Wraith, but I really don't see it much since I don't play newer levels that often.

And that is pretty much it! I have definitely used a lot more icon sets, and I could definitely make a post about those, but these five are the ones that I really identified with and used the most.
