Code Red - Finishing a Geometry Dash Level

Geometry Dash menu for CoDe ReD by AltaKarl.

I've mentioned before that in video games I have a bad habit of not finishing my projects, especially ones that I've thought about releasing publicly. I've talked about my unreleased Labyrinth 2 levels previously, but the game that is probably the worst for me regarding this is Geometry Dash.

I have dozens of layouts that I have not finished, layouts that I did finish but are extremely unpolished, levels I didn't decorate, and even a few that I did decorate but never finished, let alone release.

I've been trying to get better at this, but I unfortunately haven't been able to do that much. However, today I finally released a level that I have been sitting on for a few months now: Code Red.

The level contains blocks and spikes and most GD levels do, but it also has a lot of fake ones. The only way to differentiate them is that the fake ones are slightly dimmer and flash at a different rate than the real ones. Specifically, the real blocks flash every 2 beats, while the fake ones flash every 3 beats.

I got the idea for this level on June 23, 2025 (or at least that's when I first shared it with some friends), which was around the time I started this blog. It features very minimal decoration as I really didn't want to add anything that could be potentially distracting, to keep what's real and what's fake as clear as possible.

And, of course, I had to use Code Red by Dr. Phonics as the song. I had the idea of a level like this a bit before I knew what song I wanted to use, but once I connected it with Code Red I knew it had to be that one. It's not only a song I really like, but also definitely solidified the idea of flashing red blocks.

I created the first minute of the level that very same day, however I was sort of slow with progress after that. About a week later I did the first wave part, and I eventually did the cube and the first half of the spider part, but after that I didn't do anything else.

That is until literally yesterday when I got struck with all the motivation I needed to create every part of it afterwards. I completed the rest of the gameplay last night, and polished it and uploaded it today. Perhaps one day I'll get better at finishing these things more quickly, but also perhaps not.

Regardless, I am extremely proud of how the level turned out, and super happy that I can finally share it with others! It's an idea I was very excited to execute, and hopefully other people can enjoy it too.
